I can remember when my parents let me have my own little piece of the technology boom, it way my first cell phone. I was allowed to have it because I was working at a movie theater and had to drive home from work late at night. Each month I paid my own bill for that phone with my parents’ prepaid credit cards. However, now children are allowed to have technology at a much earlier age. Kids have computers, Xboxes, cell phones, and the Wii from a very young age. But is it good for them?
The kids that I babysat could program their phone, send files, and find things on youtube better than I could, but they also have decided lack of imagination than when I was younger. Kids today are used to being entertained every second of the day by some type of technology and video games or online casino games. The kids that I watched not only have a hard time entertaining themselves but they are unable to think of games on their own. I can remember being your and being able to come with a game using a bowl and stick. Today’s kids cannot even find entertainment in board games. So while children can run technology better than adults, are they really able to do much else?
While it is undeniable that technology has made acquiring knowledge a thousand times easier, I found that children are not using technology to learn. Children seem less inclined to do something educational on the computer. They would rather use their time playing games or looking for something entertaining. Even thought the internet offer access to thousand of interesting things that children can learn and discover, they are spending time watching music videos. Gone are the days where children would read from books and play school with a white board. Almost all the children that I nannied for could not put themselves into an imaginary situation, they had to have the situation brought before them using technology like videos game of computer games.
